This paper analyses two aspects of Salvador Allende´s  Government Programme. Firstly, the theoretical argumentos on which the programme was based and secondly the main economic proposals that were included in the programme. The economic basis of the programme were taken from the economic thinking of a large number of social and political scientist and from well known economist whose writing had had a considerable influence on chilean politics. For the Popular Unity coalition the internal conditions had lead to a pattern of economic growth that tended to concentrate the benefits of it into a very small minority reinforcing this pattern and thus hampering the prospect of a more equitable social and economic development. To break this vicious circle was the main objective of Salvador Allende´s government.
