The new aspect of the "nueva novela hispanoamericana", represented by Vargas Llosa's 1962 The Time of Hero, lies in the rework of categories from the realistic tradition under premises that seek to awaken in readers direct experiences of ugliness. This article analyses the two aesthetics involved in this process: one that constructs a vast fiction world of ugliness (KarlRosenkranz's Asthetik des Hasslichen), and another that enables readers to experience ugliness directly (Wirkungsasthetik).
