The relatively late incorporation of the vast territory of Magallanes to the Chilean jurisdiction for colonization settlement (1843) did not result in an immediate and full integration to the political-administrative system of the Republic, according to constitutional rules in force. Its statute was rather exceptional, as a de facto Colonia first and as a Colonization Territory from 1853, a situation that would last till the end of the third decade of the XXth century. The article gives an account of the few pertinent administrative dispositions and the related cartographic support, along with some considerations to help make a more comprehensive subject.
