Abstract
DIAZ, NORMA I; PRIETO, ALFREDO and BAHAMONDE, GABRIEL. SHY GUANACOS, TRUSTING HUEMULS: THE WESTERN BOUNDARY OF TERRESTRIAL SOUTHERN HUNTERS-GATHERERS. Magallania [online]. 2007, vol.35, n.1, pp. 133-138. ISSN 0718-2244. doi: 10.4067/S0718-22442007000100009.
Based on historical records for the pre-Andean zone, the paper examines the role of the huemul (Hippo-camelus bisulcus) as prey of choice for Southern Patagonian terrestrial hunter-gatherers. We review archaeological evidence for the consumption of these cervids and also explore whether their behavioural patterns can be considered the result of hunting pressure by human communities of Southern Patagonia
Keywords : ethology; cervids; ethnic boundaries; hunter-gatherers.
