Resumen
MORALES-GUZMAN, Fernanda y MELGOZA-ALEMAN, Rosa M. Treatment of Direct Red 23 Azo Dye by Anaerobic/Aerobic Sequencing Batch Reactors. Inf. tecnol. [online]. 2009, vol.20, n.1, pp. 73-82. ISSN 0718-0764. doi: 10.4067/S0718-07642009000100009.
The treatment of the azo dye Direct Red 23 was evaluated by an anaerobic/aerobic process done in a single reactor. Two reactors were used: one was an expanded-bed with granular activated carbon as redox mediator and the other containing the suspended biomass, both operated in batch mode. The efficiency of the process was evaluated by the reduction and transformation of the azo dye to total aromatic amines in the anaerobic phase and the degradation of these in the aerobic phase. The elimination of azo dye direct red was by microorganisms and not by adsorption in the granular activated carbon. The concentration of azo dye used was of 25 to 100 mg L-1. In the expanded-bed reactor the removal efficiency of the dye was 90 % and the elimination of the amines formed was of 100 %.
