DROPPELMANN, Carmen V y OETTINGER, Michael. Treatment of Landfill Leachate using Activated Sludge. Inf. tecnol. [online]. 2009, vol.20, n.1, pp. 11-19. ISSN 0718-0764. doi: 10.4067/S0718-07642009000100003.
In this work the behavior of an activated sludge is studied according to its capacity to remove the biochemical oxygen demand (BOD) and ammonium nitrogen of a leachate previously treated in an anaerobic pond. The BDO5 and N-NH4 concentrations in the pretreated leachate ranged from 1150 to 3017 mg/L and between 1350 to 1750 mg/L respectively. The study was carried out in a pilot scale reactor of 30L operating at three load factors. At higher load factor (0.073 kg BOD5/kg SSV day, 0.07 kg N-NH4/SSV), operating with a hydraulic residence time of 10 days, high BOD5 (98%, 0.24 kg BOD5/m3 day) and high N-NH4 removals (99%, 0.15 kg N-NH4/m3 day) were achieved. Under these operating conditions the effluent concentrations of BOD5 (41 mg/L) and N-NH4 (10 mg/l) complies with the official Chilean sewage emission standards.
