Some rheological characteristics of pastes prepared from a mixture of iron ores. concentration tailings and slimes. as well as others properties of the solid component of the paste, are presented. The methodology applied to characterize the mineral pastes include the use of slump, flume and viscosity tests. The results show that solid component of tailings pastes are predominantly hematite with little amounts of quartz, goethite, gibbsite and caolinite, with very fine size distribution (less than 25 mm); slump and flume tests showed to be very simple for consistency and fluidity characterization of mineral pastes; repose angles of 5° aproximately can be achieved with no difficulty; and the pastes with solids content of 70 and 72.5% showed tixotropic behavior for the rheological cycle 11001 rpm.
