This work presents three cases of ternary distillation where side-stream distillation columns are feasible alternatives to sequences of simple distillation columns. Alternatives are compared using results from computer simulation. In two cases, distillation of ideal and non ideal ternary mixtures, side-stream column follows literature heuristic recommendation. In the extractive distillation case, the procedure followed in this work allowed to define a feasible side-stream column. The procedure is summarized in an heuristic.
