A methodology is described which allows automatic determination of different Characteristic Machining Features (CMF) which describe a part. To avoid the different problems encountered in presently used methods and techniques, the CMF concept is used. This consists of the volume of material that must be eliminated by a machining process, plus the existing tool that can be used. The volumes of material to be eliminated have to be basic enough not to discard any possible solution without a direct equivalence to a single machining operation. The methodology proposed uses the ISO 10303 (STEP) information models as data input and output. It is concluded that the methodology proposed, together with the use of the basic CMF elemental unit, provides solutions to the problem of geometric interpretation of parts
