The objective of this paper is to establish a methodology which permits the analysis and validation of a fixture in computer-aided process planning (CAPP). The fixture has been defined as an assembly of various elements creating the link between the piece and the equipment by which it will be machined. The fixture was studied from the functional point of view (location, orientation and clamping of the piece). An information model was developed and proposed which permitted generic characterization, independently of the formative elements of the fixture, as well as algorithms and procedures which allow its analysis to assure stability in the clamping of the piece. It is concluded that the model proposed and developed in this work allows generic characterization which is independent of the elements forming the fixture
