This paper describes in detail the phases of the development of an Inspection Planning System oriented toward the inspection of coordinate measurement machines (CMM), and its integration with the total information flow through the productive process. This system is based on information exchange using the newest STEP format. The information transmitted by the STEP format is mostly related to the process variables, from the geometry of the part and its physical and technological characteristics, to the type of measuring machine and the type of probe, passing through all the Quality Control information and the requirements for Production Management. The development of the system presented has required personalization and reprogramming both of the software for the CMM and of CAD/CAM software, making use of both applications for integrating CMM inspection with CNC technologies
