In this paper we propose a dynamic model for an anaerobic digestion process for the treatment of residual water. This model is described by a set of ordinary differential equations that predict the dynamic behavior of the main species involved in this system. In contrast with other models, the one proposed is capable of quantifying the concentration of propionic acid in the medium. This model includes the electrochemical equilibrium in the liquid phase as well as the thermodynamic constraints induced by the hydrogen partial pressure. The model is tested using numerical simulation, and it shows how the propionic acid accumulates as a result of the inhibition in the methanogenic phase caused by an increase of the hydrogen partial pressure
