Resumen
AVALOS, Beatrice; CAVADA, Paula; PARDO, Marcela y SOTOMAYOR, Carmen. The teaching profession: topics and discussions in the international literature. Estud. pedagóg. [online]. 2010, vol.36, n.1, pp. 235-263. ISSN 0718-0705. doi: 10.4067/S0718-07052010000100013.
The article reviews international literature (empirical research and analytical studies) on the teaching profession including topics referred to working conditions and effects of reforms on teacher perceptions and teaching activities. On the basis of a conceptual framework centred on professional identity, the article considers views on profession, identity, agency and self-efficacy, and the role of knowledge, emotions, beliefs and meanings held by teachers in the building of identity. The studies reviewed on teachers work-life and teacher perceptions, on the effects of policies and reforms, as well as studies on how teachers interpret and mediate reforms paints a mixed situation of light and darkness. The article concludes with suggestions for research to be carried out in less developed countries -including Chile and Latin America, in order to build a data base on the teaching profession for the purpose of teacher policy making.
