Abstract

AEDO FUENTES, María Teresa. Panopticon, modern novel and society in Chile and Latin America: Manuel Bilbao's El pirata del Huayas (1855). Atenea (Concepc.) [online]. 2012, n.505, pp. 263-283. ISSN 0718-0462.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-04622012000100012.

The present work on Manuel Bilbao’s El pirata del Huayas (1855) will explore its inaugural sense of the link between novel and panopticism, literary discourse and disciplinary discourse as distinctive features of a modern literature and society in Chile. Both literature and penitentiary-panopticon will be conceived as fundamental institutions of the republican nation and order. The large number of panoptic prisons constructed across the entire continent reveals the depth and extent of the introduction of the panoptical-power model in the construction of architectural spaces, as well of the discursive, social and subjective spaces of the emerging modern republics in Latin America.

Keywords : Manuel Bilbao; 19th century Chilean novel; panopticism; penitential reforms; penitentiaries; latin american modern nations.
