ARACIL VARON, Beatriz. HERNÁN CORTÉS AND HIS CHRONICLERS: THE LAST CONQUEST OF THE HERO. Atenea (Concepc.) [online]. 2009, n.499, pp. 61-76. ISSN 0718-0462. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0718-04622009000100004.
An essential text in the Crónica de Indias, Hernán Cortés' Cartas de relación are one of the greatest examples of the 'mystifying discourse' of the Imperial endeavour in the Americas, and the first literary model creating the image of the heroic Spanish Conqueror. This paper examines the devices used by Cortés, taken from the literary genres of the time, to shape such an idealised image, and reveals how this image was absorbed by contemporary chroniclers, by looking at two significant examples (Gonzalo Fernández de Oviedo and Pedro Mártir de Anglería).
