Is it not possible to speak of a common nation that would encompass the multiplicity of sociabilities, are we more of a commercial product than a nation? This article seeks to resolve these problems by analyzing the diverse definitions of national identity from Independence to the present time. We argue that it is a mistake to conceive national identity based on Chilean psychological or racial characteristics, or geographic conditioning; and that the linking of national identity to authoritarian exercise of power, that has been done since the 20th century, has had pernicious effects. We must ask how to generate a plural and dynamic identitary vision that will allow us to recognize ourselves as a community of citizens.
