The current legislative draft that would introduce the so called «Family Courts» to the Chilean court system responds to both national and international law imperatives. In fact, it is necessary to reform the court system so as to allow that a single specialized court resolves all legal issues arising from a particular family conflict. The first part of this paper refers to the principles, ideas and institutional context behind the creation of the Family Courts. The second part contains a detailed analysis of the project regarding the organization and composition of the Family Courts, their jurisdiction, proceedings and alternative means of conflict resolution.
