Aim. To assess the effect of a nursing educational intervention in strengthening the capacity of self-care agency for elderly hypertensive patients. Methodology. Pilot study of quasi experimental design with pretest and posprueba developed in Tunja and Soracá between October and December of 2008 with a sample of 40 older adults enrolled in hypertensive, divided into four groups of Solomón. The Appraisal of Self-care Agency Scale (ASA) was used, before and after the intervention, consisted of six educational sessions with the help of videos and guides designed by the researchers. SPSS and EPIDAT was the effect with ANOVA. Results. After the educational intervention, a month, increased the self-care agency in 26.4 points and 1.9 points in the experimental and control groups respectively, were used as baseline measurement, 20.5 and 1.2 when controlled for the effect baseline. The ASA was significant gain in points 20.9 to 31.8 (p = 0.00) using basal group dependent, and 16.9 to 24 points without a baseline measure in independent experimental groups. Conclusions. The effect of the nursing educational intervention was positive as was able to improve the self-agency for the elderly with hypertension of Tunja, Colombia and hence a better prognosis of chronic disease. The instrument itself does not achieve significant changes in self-care. The study pilot contributed valuable adjustments to the main investigation.
