La Antoniana Margarita and its author, Gómez Pereira, are not widely known in psychology and psychiatry despite the fact that this text is the first to present a mechanicistic version of animal behavior. This paper provides historical information on both and discusses the philosophical premises underlying the work and the author's ideas. A brief explanation of scholastic psychology is included, as some knowledge of the subject is needed for a full understanding of the text and this article
