Chile, during 1990-2000, reduced the maternal mortality by 53.1%, with a maternal mortality rate of 18.7/100,000 live borths for 2000, fulfiling the Regional Plan for the Reduction of Maternal Mortality in the Americas. The most important factors were professional attendance for almost all childbirths (99%), natality (-14.8%) and maternal mortality reduction, especially by abortion (-40%), arterial hypertension (-42.3%) and postpartum sepsis (-91.8%). No reduction was observed in maternal deaths by pregestational diseases
