In Latin America protein-energy malnutrition still is an important cause of death and micronutrient deficiencies and stunting remain prevalent amongst the low socio economic groups. However, nutrition and physical activity- related chronic diseases are the main cause of death in the region. Facing the future we need to go beyond preventing death and disease; we need to add healthy life years. The UN Millennium Development Goals are analyzed in light of the challenges faced by countries in the region; barriers to the achievement of these goals are examined as well as possible ways of facilitating their achievement. Responsibilities and possible roles of nutrition professionals in achieving these goals are proposed: promoting technical, moral and social leadership; defining ways to achieve the right to adequate food (quantity and quality) as a basic human right, promote local actions to meet international goals defined by the UN, advice on healthy life styles and a sustainable food consumption pattern, all of which are common objectives for action and evaluation of the impact of policies and programs
