The present study has as its objective to collect information on death rituals in diverse Peruvian communities in the circumlacustrine zone of Lake Titicaca. In these communities, the concept of the world has particular meaning and explanation, and under this concept death is only sleeping. The rituals are generally performed before, during and after the burial. Taking this into account, the structure of our study consists of the following parts: (1) the foreboding and predictions of death, last words of the moribund and funeral preparation; (2) the exposition of the dead, vigils, hour, place and form of the burial, rites of the burial and role of the relatives and companions at the funeral; and (3) the meaning of mourning, family conduct, disposal of the properties of the deceased, mortuary celebrations, visits to the burial, relationship between living and the dead and role of the specialists in mortuary practices
