Resumen

KAUFFMANN DOIG, Federico. PRIMERA EXPEDICIÓN ARQUEOLÓGICA A LOS MAUSOLEOS CHACHAPOYA (S)1 DE LA LAGUNA DE LAS MOMIAS  (Dpto. de Amazonas, Perú). Chungará (Arica) [online]. 2000, vol.32, n.1, pp.49-54. ISSN 0717-7356.  http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-73562000000100009.

In May of 1997, the author conducted the first expedition to the Lagoon of the Mummies, an uninhabited place in the Amazon Andes at 2800 meters. According to the news from the journalist Alvaro Rocha and from the workers at INC Chachapoyas, laborers of the rancher Ullilén casually arrived to the desolated site. Upon realizing the presence of mausoleums, and with the idea of becoming rich, they rummaged through and mistreated approximately one fifth of the close to 200 funerary bundles that had been there intact for 500 to 700 years. The evaluation of the finding permitted the writing of a report presented to PROMPERU and to the National Institute of Culture, including an inventory, cataloguing and study of the plundered material. The rest of the remains were protected with a metal fence and left as an archaeological reserve. . We considered the finding an "archaeological miracle" considering that the Institute of Amazon Archaeology had emptied about 12 of the mausoleums in past years. We also warned about the conservation of the mummies and propose to study, with experts, the sophisticated techniques used to preserve the bodies. Also the IAA solicited and obtained laboratory analyses from the Pathology Department of the University of Minnesota, directed by Dr. A. Aufderheide
