GALEANO, Diego. Entre cuenteros y otarios: Historia transnacional de una estafa en América Latina, 1870-1930. Historia (Santiago) [online]. 2016, vol.49, n.2, pp.395-427. ISSN 0717-7194. http://dx.doi.org/10.4067/S0717-71942016000200003.
This article analyzes the dynamics of a transnational criminal practice that circulated different Latin American cities since the last quarter of the nineteenth century. This is a scam known in the Rio de la Plata and Chile as the "uncle story", in Brazil as the "conto do vigário" and in other countries of the Andean region and the Caribbean as the "Chilean package." Storytellers, vigaristas and paqueteros were three possible swindler names, while the victim was called an "otario". Using sources such as reports written by police and criminologists, criminal slag dictionaries, literary works, urban songbooks and museum pieces, this work seeks to reconstruct the routes followed by swindlers. In a critical dialogue with the pursuit of the national origins of the scam present in many of the stories about it, this article attempts to problematize the complex intersection between history and memory regarding it.
