SAN FRANCISCO, ALEJANDRO. LA DELIBERACIÓN POLÍTICA DE LOS MILITARES CHILENOS EN EL PRELUDIO DE LA GUERRA CIVIL DE 1891. Historia (Santiago) [online]. 2005, vol.38, n.1, pp. 43-84. ISSN 0717-7194.  doi: 10.4067/S0717-71942005000100004.

This article deals with the political stances of high-ranking Army officers in the months preceding the Chilean civil war of 1891. It particularly concentrates on some of these officers' public expressions, such as speeches delivered at public events -in favour of either government or opposition- and publications in the press. Thus, it is possible to perceive a series of political definitions prior to the outbreak of the civil war, whose consequences would be felt during the war and afterwards. The Armed Forces emerge as political actors influenced by civilian sectors, thus becoming decisive players. The military focussed on are General José Velásquez, Colonel Estanislao del Canto, General Orozimbo Barbosa, Pacific War Hero Manuel Baquedano and Colonel Jorge Boonen R
