This essay argues that research programme methodology helps to clarify social scientific knowledge rationality showing theories plural characteristics. Each research programme progress if develops more theoretical and empirical content that its competitors, according to the methodological rules from the philosophical core that gives its identity and heuristic power to that specific research programme. The research programme methodology (RPM) gives assessment criteria to theory sets, allowing the formal solution to incommensurability. Therefore, RPM presents heuristic advantages that suggest considering sociology as a multi programme field.
