The thesis developed in this article deals with the phenomenon of the legitimacy of storytelling in the disciplines of the social sciences and in the scientific discourse,mainly observable in central Europe and Northamerica. This is due, on the one hand, to the movement of those societies into a postmodern paradigm where knowledge is legitimated by storytelling, and on the other, to the basic categories of the narrative structure that allow a narrative interpretation to human experience. The work advocates first to define the status of storytelling within a postmodern society, then it characterizes the structure of storytelling and the categories of complication and resolution and the way these operate in legal, psychological, sociological and scientific discourse, and finally the status of genre of storytelling is defined.
