to develop nomograms of birth weight for gestational age for babies born at 23 to 36 weeks of gestation using a computerized perinatal data base collected prospectively from 1990 to 1998 at the Dr. Sotero del Rio Hospital, Santiago, Chile. Methods: 2.830 newborn infants with reliable gestational age, single pregnancies and no maternal-fetal morbidity were included in the study. The babies were born in a public hospital between 1990 and 1998. Mean birthweight, SD and weight percentiles 5, 10, 25, 50, 75, 90, 95 for each gestational age are presented. Results: A weight for gestational smoothed curve is presented and compared with the curve in use. Conclusions: Based on a large database the curve provides useful norms of birth weight for premature babies especially those with low gestational age
