Objectives. To describe behaviours and psychosocial circumstances of sexual initiation and knowlewdge, evaluations and behaviours related with contraception. Population. Adolescents, males, 15 to 18 years old, that attended secondary school in the city of Buenos Aires. Sample. 420 males from a representative sample of schools. Methods. A self-administred questionnaire of 72 questions was applied and univariated, bivariated and multivariated stastistical analysis were performed. Results: 55.5% of boys were sexually iniciated. Their mean age at iniciation was 14.9 (standard deviation = 1.5 years). Boys started sexual relations with prostitutes (41.6%), with their girlfriends (26.6%), with friends (20.2%) or with ocassional partners (10.7%). For 27.5% "it just happened", 21.9% took the decision with their partners and 21.5% decided it with a group of friends. Their principal worry was AIDS. Most of them (93.8%) evaluated that the condom is very effective as a contraceptive (between 47.4% to 51.0% gave the same evaluation to the pill or other hormonal contraceptives, the diaphragm and the IUD). 79.0% used a condom in their first intercourse and also in the following ones. But coitus interruptus and hormonal contraceptives were also important in the following intercourses. The decision of protecting themselves was taken alone when the first intercourse was with a prostitute or with an ocassional partner, and with their partner when it happened with their girlfriend or a friend. The multivariate analysis of attitudes and behaviours at first intercourse shows three different groups: "impulsive", "occasional" and "integrated". Conclusions. There is an important heterogeneity in the behaviours and psychological circumstances of boyssexual initiation. Some of them tended to integrate sexuality and affectivity; others acted prompted by a "macho" culture, and they iniciated young and in a dissociative context and anothers were tempted and didnt master the situation. The use of condoms to protect themselves from AIDS was associated, in these male adolescents, with pregnancy prevention. Perhaps the new generations will enhance male contraceptive conciousness. On behalf of the democratization of reproductive responsability, it is important to develop research that deepen our knowledge on male adolescentsrole in the contraceptive process
