Objective: to evaluate length of breast feeding and reasons to interrupt it. Subjects and methods: clients looking for some pediatric product in thirteen pharmacies at metropolitan Santiago, Chile, were surveyed through a special questionary by trained pharmacy students for type of feeding given to their child, maternal use of drugs along breast feeding, reasons to stop breast feeding among others. Results:322 questionaries were recovered in 1996 and 599 in 1997, respectively. More than 90% of surveyed clients were female. Exclusive breast feeding length was under three months in 63.7% of cases in 1996 and in 50.4% of them in 1997. The main reason to stop breast feeding was mothers persuasion that she didnt have enough milk (about one third). Almost one third of mothers used some drug along breast feeding, specially sulpiride. Conclusion: community pharmacists may actively and effectively participate in programs destinated to educate people in several aspects of health care
