Ni, W, and Ni-W catalysts were prepared, supported on pillared clays (PILCS) obtained of the smectite portion of a Chilean clay. This clay represents the floor of a carbon coat exploited until 1997 in Lota, to the south of Concepción. It has been studied the influence of the preparation method in the catalytic activity: impregnating salts of Ni and W on the PILCS, and introducing the metal in the structure of the PILC used as a support. The catalytic activity was measured in the reaction of hydrodesulfurization (HDS) of thiophene. It has been found that the best bimetallic catalyst was prepared by impregnation. This catalyst presents the highest level of conversion of the thiophene and a high selectivity towards the forming of cis and trans butenes isomers. The results of the catalytic activity have been discussed in terms of some texture and chemical properties of the catalyst
