The text below is part of a comparative study between the urban revitalization process of the "Meatpacking District" in New York City, and the urban revitalization projects of Região da Luz, in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The article's objectives are to undertake a critical overview of the main urban sociology theories and to reflect about the ways in which comtemporary sociology is being in need of a revision of its definitions about what cities are. This analysis considers the processes of urban revitalization and gentrification, that are becoming more frequent in cities all over the world.
