This article intends to present the development that New Testament exegesis has had in the history of the last two millennia. First, it confirms that the most significant contribution of exegesis to theology and to the life of the Church is closely related to the union between Bible study and the regula fidei. Also, it states that the way researchers approach the Gospels is intimately connected to the ways of thinking and living of human beings at different times in history and with some difficulties that were verified at the time; these various approaches relate in one way or another to the theological task.
