ABSTRACT This paper attempts to make a contribution to the undestanding of the logic with which journalists face their job of informing. It first tackles the issue of the key social service vocation that journalism entais, its origin and the principles it is grounded on. The article deals with the meaningfulness and the reach of the three basic requirements of the handling of information. The journalist has the ethical duty to provide truthful, socially useful and propitious information. The author finally tackles the incidence on the journalist's job from the intervention of other agents, especially the sources from which the information comes, the journalistic company for which s/he works and the historical factor.
