The journal publishes original papers, reviews and book comments in the fields of marine and estuarine biology and ecology; physical, chemical and biological oceanography; marine geology; aquaculture and fisheries.

The Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía is the oldest Chilean journal exclusively publishing articles in marine science.

The first issue was published in April 1948, under the name of Revista de Biología Marina, being Dr. Parmenio Yánez A. its first Director.

In 1997, the journal changed its name to Revista de Biología Marina y Oceanografía but it continued with the corresponding volume.

One volume of three issues is published each year: (1) in April, (2) in August and (3) in December.

Its abbreviated title is Rev. biol. mar. oceanog., and it should be used in bibliographies, footnotes, references and bibliographic strips.
