Scope and policy

Theme and Objective

Nueva Revista del Pacífico publishes texts in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese. It accepts a wide variety of themes among literary and linguistic studies. Its researches - developed from different theoretical and methodological perspectives are about writers and literary works of art (either national or foreign) and also about the study of the language on its various representations.

The works that are a result of national or international investigation projects, such as Fondecyt, Fondos del Libro or others will have a special preference.

On its web site, Nueva Revista del Pacífico is open to a broad type of readers, who have in common their interest for the knowledge and the interpretation of diverse aesthetical and thematic proposals which come from literary texts and that include the most varied language problematics.

The essays received

The essays received at the Nueva Revista del Pacífico will be evaluated by a double-blind system. This means that two referees could approved, approved with modifications o reject the article. If one article is approved by one referee and rejected by other, the Nueva Revista del Pacífico will ask a third referee who will decide about the article.

The Nueva Revista del Pacífico, which was founded in 1964, belongs to the Humanities School at Universidad de Playa Ancha, Valparaíso, Chile. From 2013 on, the magazine is published every semester and it accepts unpublished studies and articles in literature and linguistics and all its related works in cinema and other means of communication. This magazine is open to any researcher from any University, either private or public, from Chile or any foreign country and written in Spanish, English, French or Portuguese.

The Nueva Revista del Pacífico has three sections:

a) Studies: scientific articles about Literature and Linguistics which may generate knowledge or new perspectives in the area. Studies must not be over 25 pages including bibliography and notes. The article must have a short title, an abstract of not over ten lines in Spanish and English and a list with a maximum of 5 key words in English and Spanish.

b) Interviews: Intellectual dialogs with prestigious personalities coming from the Chilean or Foreign cultural world (authors, critics, cultural representatives, etc) The interviews must not be over 10 pages and they have the same requirements than the articles.

c) Reviews: Evaluative and descriptive texts about recent editorial news in the field of Literature and Linguistics. The reviews must not be over 5 pages. Formally; Reviews have the same requirements than the articles.

Publishing ethics

I.- Authors′ duties

  1. The authors of original articles must indicate that their manuscripts are the result of an original investigation. Any use of other people′s ideas, must be indicated following the pertinent citing rules.

  2. Plagiarism, in any form, is considered ethically unacceptable by this publisher.

  3. The authorship of a work includes every person who has made a substantial contribution to it. Anyone who might have participated this way is considered an author and, on that condition, he/she agrees to send the work for its publication.

  4. The article must be presented in a format that allows others have access to its sources. In case it was necessary, the Editorial Committee, will reserve the right to ask the authors for the information they have used in the elaboration of their work. This information will be kept for a reasonable period of time after its publication.

  5. The same research or investigation can not be sent to several publications. In the same way, the editorial will not accept a work having a substantially similar investigation which has been previously published.

  6. Any bibliographical or funding source must be mentioned in the manuscript.

  7. If there were any institution endorsing the investigation, It must be indicated in the manuscript.

  8. In case the author, after having already sent the manuscript, may find out mistakes or inaccuracies on their work, they must immediately indicate that to the magazine editor, giving the possible solutions to correct the mistakes.

II.- Editor′s duties

  1. The editor is responsible for maintaining the scientific quality of the magazine and the editorial. He must guarantee that all articles are assessed  using …double peer review system, in the most accurate and objective way and without any type of discrimination.

  2. The editor will turn down any investigation or research that do not contribute to literary knowledge or the ones have bibliography which is not updated or limited.

  3. The editor will turn down any investigation or research that show fraud, plagiarism, duplicity, fragmentation or an excessive number of personal cites.

  4. The editor and all the members of the Editing Comitee, must not reveal any information of the manuscript sent to the magazine with the exception of the authors, area editors, reviewers and some other editorial advisers.

III.- Reviewers′ duties

  1. Blind peer review allows the magazine the possibility to make editorial decisions, which may consider accepting or rejecting the work; or making suggestions to the author in order to make some improvements to the article.

  2. When a reviewer does not feel properly qualified to evaluate a work or does not have the needed time to do the task, he must inform and present the excuses to the editor and decline to evaluate the article.

  3. Any document received for revision must be considered confidential. It must not be discussed or passed to any other person except the ones authorized by the editor.

  4. Revisions must be absolutely objective, and the reviewer must use clear language and back up all his arguments. Personal criticism to the author will not be allowed.

  5. Reviewers must detect if there are any other published works related to the article being reviewed, which have not been cited. This must be informed to the editor.

Its title abbreviation is Nueva rev.pac., which must be used in bibliographies, footnotes, legends and bibliographic references.

Preparation of manuscripts

Presentation of the text: All the articles presented to the NRP must adopt the format MLA 7th edition. In all the works, the notes must be numbered and placed at the bottom of the page. Footnotes must be about content or bibliographic comments.

MLA cites must indicate the author’s surname and the number of the page. Eg. (Goic 23) In case more than one work from the same author is cited, the title in italics must also be included: (Goic, Historia 32). Some of the uses are specified below:

A text with two authors (Calderón y Fierro 25)
A text with more than three authors (Sarloet al. 54)
When a text is cited indirectly: (Cit in Cánovas 202)

The bibliography in MLA must be alphabetically organized by the author`s name. Examples:

Assessment system: All the received works in Nueva Revista del Pacífico will be evaluated by two prestigious external referees. They can approve, the articles. If both referees agree on the evaluation, the article will be approved, approved with modifications or rejected. In case one of the referees approved the article, while the other rejected it, the editors would invite a third referee to make the final decision, whether to accept it or reject it.

The referees’ final decision will not be subjected to appeal. The works that are a result of national or international investigation projects, such as Fondecyt, Fondos del Libro or others will have a special preference.

Author’s notification: Every author will be informed of the evaluation results

Works publication: the editing and the manuscripts selection will be the exclusive responsibility of the NRP editors.

None of the original documents will be returned. All the accepted works to be published become NRP property.
