Scope and policy
Latin American Journal of Aquatic Research - LAJAR is the continuation of the journal Investigaciones Marinas published since 1970 by the School of Marine Sciences, Faculty of Marine Sciences and Geography from the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso. This journal publishes in English language, original research articles, reviews, and short communications, on aquatic science which contain results of research conducted in continental and marine waters of Latin America.
Acceptance for publication of a manuscript will be made considering the opinion of anonymous reviewers and associate editors. Following acceptance, the manuscript will be submitted to a format revision by the publisher, who reserves the right to make the necessary changes to maintain editorial standards of the journal.
LAJAR Journal publishes Research articles, Scientific Reviews and Scientific Communications.
Research Articles. Preferably the accepted manuscript should not exceed 30 pages, including tables and figures. The article contains a summary (maximum 250 words), keywords, followed by a text with a defined structure, details of which are given below.
Scientific Reviews. Reviews contain a summary of the state of knowledge on a specific topic of research. They must contain an abstract (maximum 250 words), keywords, followed by a continuous freestyle text. The manuscript should not exceed 20 pages, including figures and tables.
Scientific Communications. They are short papers on a specific topic that describe methods or preliminary results. Communications must include an abstract (maximum 200 words) and keywords. The introduction, methodology, results and discussion should be written continuously in a single section, without specifying subtitles. The length of the manuscript should be less than 10 pages, including figures and tables.
Form and preparation of manuscripts
Manuscripts should be submitted exclusively online, on the website (http://www.lajar.cl). The manuscript must be written in English language, in Microsoft Word format, written with 1,5 spacing, in Times New Roman size 12, normal orientation, A4 format. Tables and figures should be included at the end of the text.
Authors should suggest at least three potential reviewers of recognized competence in the knowledge field of the submitted manuscript (name, institution and e-mail). The organization of the manuscript should be organized in the following order:
Title: Brief and descriptive. A running head of no more than 50 characters should also be provided.
Authors: Indicate name, last name (paternal only, when applicable), affiliation, address, and e- mail of the corresponding author.
Abstract: Should contain 250 words maximum, indicating the main results or findings presented in the manuscript.
Keywords: Maximum of six, arranged in order of importance.
Citations: Consider only published works o in press. References should be ordered chronologically indicating author′s last name and year of publication (e.g., Muñoz et al., 2009; Alvarez, 2010; Johnson & Smith, 2013; Palmer, 2015a, 2015b). Peronal
References: Indicate only works mentioned in the text, References must be organized alphabetically by the first author's last name. The authors' initials and last names should be written using capitals, only the last name will be writenin full. For the second and following authors' initials should precede their last names; use a comma to separate them. Different formats for different types of frequently used references follow:
a) Scientific papers references should follow this format: author(s),year of publication. article title. Abbreviated journal name (according to the World List of Scientific Periodicals), volume and (number in parentheses): First and last page numbers.

d) Articles published on Internet should indicate: Author(s), year of publication, article title, web site, Date reviewed.

Graphs, maps, schemes, drawings, or photographs are referred to as Figure, abbreviated in the text as Fig. Figures (JPG,TIFF, PNG) should be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals; captions should be self-explanatory and written on a separate page in English. Figures, including text ( in Arial Narrow) and symbols within should not require more than three reductions in order to fit the final size; symbols should be no smaller than 1.5 mm high. Figures can be a maximum of 15 cm wide by 21 cm high (including the caption). Figures should sent in size 1:1 and high resolution.
Photographs should be sent in digital format (JPG, TIFF or PNG) in 300 dpi considering an adequate range of tones and contrasts.
The tables (Excel or Word) are numbered consecutively with Arabic numerals. Legends should be self-explanatory. The heading of each column must clearly express its content and measurement units.
Manuscript accepted for publication
Once accepted for publication, authors must send the final text with corrections made and accepted by the relevant associate editor. The final text will retain the same format of the initial version submitted. Tables and figures should be sent in separate files, with their respective legends.
Proofs will be sent to the corresponding author for review.
Paper accepted are subjected to a publication charge of US$ 300,00. This fee is independent of the length of manuscript, and the number of figures and tables.
