INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Scope and policy

The Calidad en Ia Educación journal, dedicated towards professionals, researchers and teachers, publishes different kinds of works, detailed as follows:

Research:

Articles that inform about the results of field studies in the realm of pre-school, primary, secondary or higher education. The length should not exceed 10,000 words including tables, graphs, and bibliography.

Essays:

Monographic works that provide an original reflection on subjects related to pre-school, primary, secondary or higher education. These will include theoretical or methodological discussions, as well as reflections generated by empirical data. The length should not exceed 5,000 words including tables, graphs, and bibliography.

Experiences:

Articles that systematize or account for innovative practices that are being developed within educational institutions, whether they relate to management, direct teaching, institutional analysis, or research on internal processes, in addition to possible professionally inspired initiatives. It is also a space to disseminate experiences related to inter-institutional contributions and implementation of public policies in the sphere of tertiary education. Its length should not exceed 4,000 words including tables and graphs.

Given the indexation of the magazine in SciELO Chile, the publication of research is favored over Essays and Experiences.

In general terms, the journal is permanently open to receive collaboration. However, in order to plan the editorial work flow, the eventual inclusion of works for the number corresponding to the first semester considers primarily those works submitted up to the last day of March of each year. In the same way, the issue corresponding to the second semester considers works received up to the last day of August of each year.

Form and preparation of manuscripts

1.- Peer Review System

Once the article is received, the Editorial Committee will decide its relevance according to the magazine's editorial objective. If considered relevant, the article will be sent to thematic experts for evaluation.

Each article will be evaluated by external thematic experts with a double blind trial system. Thus, the name of the authors and evaluators will be reserved during the process.
The final question to which the evaluator must respond is whether or not the work should be published. The question recognizes the following alternatives:

  1. Yes
  2. Yes, with minor observations indicated
  3. Only with major observations indicated
  4. No

If the ruling of the reviewer presents observations, the author will be given a timeframe in which to correct them.

The fact that an article submitted to evaluation is approved does not imply that it will be immediately published. The final decision regarding publication or rejection of an article corresponds to the magazine's Editorial Committee.

Once a decision has been made regarding the publication or rejection of the article, the author will be directly notified in writing about the final decision.

2.- Editorial norms

With respect to the author:

Articles will be received in Spanish and English, and the latter will be translated into Spanish.

All articles proposed for publication in "Calidad en la Educación" must be original and unpublished.

When delivering an article to the editor of "Calidad en la Educación”, the author makes a commitment to not present it simultaneously to another publication as long as he/she has not been notified by the editing team, with a definite rejection or acceptance to be included in the publication. In the latter case, it is additionally required that the presentation of the article in any other journal or other media outlet, must be made after its publication in "Calidad en la Educación" where the original text is included.

It is the author's responsibility to attach all the data in the identification file.

With respect to the article:

In relation to the approximate length of the article:

  1. Research: must not exceed 10,000 words, including tables, graphs, notes, and bibliography.
  2. Essays: must not exceed 5,000 words, including tables, graphs, notes, and bibliography.
  3. Innovating experiences: must not exceed 4,000 words, including notes, tables, and graphs.

Articles must be presented in MS Word digital format, in letter size, with 2.5 cm. margins, double spaced, except for the titles which must be single spaced, font size 12, in Times New Roman type. Pages must be numbered consecutively, starting on the title page. Tables and figures will be presented in separate digital files in the format indicated below.

3.- Style Manual

Title Page

The first page of the manuscript must contain the title of the work (concise and descriptive).
Do not indicate the name of the author.

Abstract and keywords

A concise and factual summary of 150 to 200 words is required. This abstract will briefly indicate the purpose of the article, the main results, and main conclusions.

Following the summary, the authors must provide a maximum of five key words. These key words will be used for indexation purposes, and will be selected from the controlled list of key words of the Educational Resources International Center (ERIC) thesaurus descriptors.

Should the submission be in Spanish, the author must include an English translation of the abstract and keywords into.

Identification file.

The author must complete the identification and admissibility file which is available through the link: (http://goo.cl/5202S). which should be uploaded to the site together with the article. Articles that do not comply with the required format or which are not accompanied by the form mentioned above, will not be submitted to the evaluation process.

Citing in the main text References

Deliver the manuscripts according to the latest Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (APA). A synopsis of this manual is available at the American Psychological Association web site (http://apa.org). Make sure all references cited in the text are also present in the list of references (and vice versa).

Citations of other works must be limited to what is strictly necessary for the article. Any mention must be brief, and accompanied by precise references following the citation style of the APA.
Always provide the DOI of each reference if one has been assigned to it, according to the recommendations of the latest guidelines of APA style.

Tables and figures

The number of tables and graphs should be limited to those strictly essential for the comprehension of the text. The approximate position of the tables and figures must be indicated in the manuscript, and they must be sent separately. Tables and figures must be numbered consecutively with Arabic numbers:  Table 1, Figure 1, etc. Figures must be presented in JPG. TIFF, or RPS (high resolution) format, and tables and graphs must be presented in Microsoft Excel.

Notes

Explanatory notes or notes with complementary information must be presented as footnotes, numbered consecutively in Arabic numbers, identified as superscripts in the text. They must include the name and property of the author.

Formal aspects

  1. The use of precise and pertinent language is recommended, in addition to writing that is understandable, and correct spelling. Preferably, write in third person except when the characteristics of the text justify not doing so.
  2. Subtitles: for the text to be more easily read, subdividing the article by incorporating subtitles, numbers, or letters is recommended.

Use of capital letters, bold, italics, and quotations marks:

  1. CAPITAL letters must be reserved for acronyms and titles.
  2. Only the first letter of the first word in the title is capitalized (whether it is the title of a book or an article).
  3. Bold letters are only used in titles and subtitles of tables and graphs.
  4. Italics must be used in terms or expressions that do not belong to the language in which the text is written. The same is true for the titles of books and names of periodical publications that appear in the text.
  5. Quotation marks: double (" ") and simple (' ') must be used to frame the reproduction of textual paragraphs (when they do not have a different indentation and smaller size than the rest of the text), direct quotes, titles of articles (for example: "Bases for the design of public policies in higher education"), and expressions that need to be highlighted.

4.- Other Aspects

  1. The magazine reserves the right to propose corrections.
  2. The contributions received are of the exclusive responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily reflect the opinion of the National Council of Education. Under these circumstances and so far as the contents of "Calidad en la Educación” operate under the principle of good faith, the editorial team presumes that contributors have adequately managed the sources from which they extract information (bibliographic, data, etc.), in terms of ethics, methodology, and discipline.

Hi. Acceptance of a work for publication assumes that copyrights, in any means, are transferred to the editor of the magazine.
